THE MAGIC

Since immemorial times the creation of Musical Stringed Instruments has been a common denominator and discipline for many civilizations, developing unique techniques for the creation of resonance in an acoustic box, using strings with different tensions and scales to produce sound.

Over the past 12 years, I’ve been creating handmade stringed instruments and learned through a succession of knowledge, shared by my teacher Ramon Inglesias with more than 50 years of experience creating guitars, bass, violins, and cellos, among others. As well as researching and learning the right techniques to develop high-volume acoustic instruments artisanally with different American luthiers from Colombia, Mexico, and the US.

My latest research was in India, where I went on an advanced investigation about the construction of the sitar. This research gave me the knowledge of understanding deeply the construction of this handmade instrument with its many nuances. I’m currently in the construction of the sitar using the same technics from important luthiers from India, as a product from the research.

I have built over 35 unique stringed instruments. My workshop is based in Guatemala City where I provide maintenance and create custom-made stringed instruments for national and international artists.

THE LUTHIER EXPERIENCE

In order to help you learn and build your own Stringed Instrument from scratch, we have divided the workshop into 7 phases of the process, guiding you step by step with personal assistance in each phase of it. All the materials will be provided, you don’t need to have any experience or knowledge of woodworking, and all the information will be provided so you can choose which instrument to build.

CHOOSING YOUR INSTRUMENT

In order to help you learn and build your own Stringed Instrument from scratch, we have divided the workshop into 7 phases of the process, guiding you step by step with personal assistance in each phase of it. All the materials will be provided, you don’t need to have any experience or knowledge of woodworking, and all the information will be provided so you can choose which instrument to build.

THE SCALE DESIGN

Here we will create a design of the instrument, for this, each participant will draw by hand all the details of the instrument, the precision in this section is extremely important because this draft will determine all the measurements of the wood we need to accomplish.

WOOD SECTION

The wood used normally for the creation of musical instruments has different physical and acoustic characteristics to consider, such as weight, acoustic reverberation, visual aspect, and workability. You will be taught precise and accurate explanations in each characteristic, which will help you choose which wood has the best match for your instrument. We will provide all the materials needed and we will have different options in each type of wood so you can choose from different grain shapes the acoustic reverberation and aspect of your interest.

TECHNICS AND WORKING WITH MACHINERY

The right use of different tools makes everything easy; we will receive instructions in all the equipment that will be used, and each student will receive their own precision tools; mainly because most of the process of building a stringed instrument with mechanical process requires accuracy. Everyone will have their own personal protection equipment and we´ll notify you when is required to use it.

CUTTING, GLUING, AND PRESSURE-TREATED WOOD

One of the most important steps for the construction of guitars is gluing all the wood together, the surface has to be perfect, the time of gluing has to be on time and the right pressure has to be applied in specific areas. This section will be rehearsed, taking into consideration that we cannot make mistakes for this part of the procedure. Sometimes we will take longer time analyzing the way everything has to be glued, because it can look like an easy process, nevertheless, it is.

CARVING AND CUTTING DOWN

Woodcarving tools work in one direction only, and if they are properly used, they can carve easily, and precisely, it can be fun work to do. You have to remember that it´s easier to take out than to put it in. We will focus all the time, in how to remove pieces of wood to achieve the primal goal, we will be chasing perfection, even though it´s a bit difficult to achieve, but if we have the patience and precision in each step, we will reach our goal.

TUNING THE STRINGS

The notes in each fret wire have to tune perfectly, this will be achieved once the instrument is finished, because the setup of the instrument, is the last thing we will do, each string has to be calibrated in 3 main aspects, the rectitude of the arm, the height of the string and the tone in each fret
